Today I am joined by Master of Public Health Program Director Dr. Jan K. Carney is Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy and Professor of Medicine at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. She earned a BA from Middlebury College, MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Carney is active in public health practice, research, education, and service. She served as Vermont’s Commissioner of Health under three gubernatorial administrations, championing improvements in children’s health insurance, preventing teen smoking, and improving cancer screening. She received the Vermont Public Health Association “Public Health Champion” Award in 2018 and was recently awarded the UVM President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award for her innovative teaching, creative leadership, and service to the UVM community.

Nationally, Dr. Carney is currently a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians, the largest medical-specialty organization, and second-largest physician group in the United States. She recently served as Vice-Chair of American College of Physicians’ Health and Public Policy Committee, contributing to health policy publications about social determinants of health, insurance coverage, and patient partnership in health care.
