The most practical guidance is to experiment and measure. Most organizations manage their projects as part of their strategic product portfolio management. In addition to the standard product development and management metrics and KPIs (new product revenue, market share, profit margin), consider adding new metrics to quantify the level of innovation including healthy indicators for success: motivation, cognition, determination, creativity, random serendipity, autonomy, flexibility, control, risk-taking, experimentation, etc. If properly evaluated and measured, overtime, your organization can begin to see patterns for success that can help you to innovate better.
