Today I am joined by Scott Sabin, CEO of Plant With Purpose. He has worked at Plant With Purpose for 30 years and recently celebrated this career milestone in 2023. Under his direct supervision, the San Diego-based Christian nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing global poverty and environmental damage due to climate change, Plant With Purpose expanded from a single program in one country to now include more than 1,500 communities in nine countries around the world. Today, Plant With Purpose helps thousands of people transform their lives and the environment around them through sustainable agriculture, economic development and environmental reforestation in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Haiti, Malawi, Mexico, Tanzania, and Thailand. Sabin’s passion for spiritual, environmental, and economic work on behalf of the rural poor has driven the organization’s success.
Sabin has spent his entire adult life in service to others. First, he served his country for seven years in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer. He became a program manager for Floresta after reentering civilian life. And then, he joined Plant With Purpose in 1993 where he has served in an executive capacity since 1995.
Plant With Purpose planted its 50 millionth tree earlier this year and anticipates doubling that to 100 million trees planted over the next four years. The group’s holistic model focuses on community-led innovation and leadership that helps global communities reverse structural and environmental causes of rural poverty. This is accomplished by restoring one community at a time.
Sabin published a book in 2010 titled Tending to Eden: Environmental Stewardship for God’s People. He is an active member with Mount Soledad Presbyterian Church in La Jolla, Calif.
