Michelle Schärer-Umpierre

Today I am joined by Dr. Michelle Schärer-Umpierre, a marine biologist with experience in Caribbean marine ecosystems. A graduate from the Marine Sciences Department of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez she participated in research projects of local and US academic and scientific institutions as a diver, technician, investigator and consultant. Projects she has been involved with include a variety of environmental, social-ecological, fisheries, conservation, and marine protected areas. She leads investigations in reef fish ecology applying bioacoustics to understand grouper behaviors when they communicate as they aggregate to spawn. Her goal is to provide scientific information that supports management and conservation actions.
