Scott Amyx Speaking at MIT

Scott Amyx spoke at the MIT New Space Age Conference on April 29th at the MIT Media Lab along with Kevin O’Connell, former Director of the Office of Space Commerce at the U.S. Department of Commerce and MIT Media Lab Space Affiliated Researcher and Blair DeWitt, CEO of Lunar Station Corp on why the Moon is big business.

Going to the Moon isn’t simply a science project. There are potentially trillions of dollars at stake. Strategically, the Moon has something essential for survival in space: water. Lunar ice can supply oxygen for explorers and hydrogen fuel for deep space travel.

On mining Lunar water alone, Watts, Griffis and McOuat Limited, a geological and mining consultancy, estimates a value of $206 billion over the next 30 years.

Water is essential for supporting deep space economic and development activities — satellite refueling, International Space Station, Gateway Space Station/ Lunar Gateway, Artemis Base Camp on the surface, Mars Space Station, space agriculture and tourism and hotels.

The Moon has substantial natural resources which could be exploited in the future. Lunar resources include metals such as iron, titanium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, magnesium, and rare-earth elements for building critical, life-supporting infrastructure, components, and systems.

The economic potential of Lunar mining is attracting international conglomerates and innovative startups that specialize in mining, manufacturing, construction, energy, transportation, agriculture, and insurance. According to Japan’s Lunar Industry Vision Council, there are more than 100 companies interested in pursuing Lunar-related businesses and services. Ispace, a private lunar robotic exploration company, will be sending its first Lunar lander for commercial missions this year. They are backed by some of the largest industrial and financial conglomerates such as Airbus, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho Bank. The Moon is big business.
