At work, we are encouraged to work collaboratively and reach a consensus. Right? But there is great value in presenting a dissenting view.
Dissent is an active challenge to the majority view. Dissent both liberates and stimulates our thinking. Regardless of whether or not the dissenter wins or even when others believe it’s wrong, minority voices still stimulate different types of thinking.
Majority consensus stimulates a biased and convergent way of thinking. Whereas minority views challenge the majority consensus and stimulates unbiased and divergent way of thinking. As a result, we become more independent thinkers and, more importantly, we think divergently.
