Contrary to asking your product people to come up with the next big idea, use crowdsourcing to analyze different characteristics of a problem that you’re trying to solve. You actually don’t want to tell them what is the total product that you’re building because you don’t want bias and a point of reference. But rather you have different people working on different things.
First you have to develop the schemas for the desired product. Each characteristic of a schema is given to a different group of people to find analogs in other domains. So if you have 10 characteristics of a schema, you have 10 different groups searching analogs for these specific characteristics.
And then another set of people apply the mechanisms learned from distant domains to apply to the original problem.
The approach uses crowdsourcing to separate people who develop the schema and characteristics from the people who find analogs in distant domains to the people who apply mechanisms from those analogs to solve the problem. Crowdsourcing increases the human capacity to find analogies by distributing the steps to different people. And this approach also allows non-subject matter experts to participate in the innovation process.
