To address our natural tendency to ideate within our domain of expertise, we have to find inspiration from other domains. The first step is to breakdown the problem into a set of concepts that can help organize the information. As an example, let’s say that you’re a chair manufacturer and you’re looking to make a breakthrough in kindergarten chairs.
When we think about desired benefits, we may think of characteristics like safety or sturdiness. But that’s not detailed enough, we need to get more granular. What do you mean by safety? Well, I don’t want kids getting hurt when they lean back and fall. Ok! Taking that specific characteristic as an example, we look for inspiration in other domains. What are some examples that keep you upright even if tipped over?
In toys, they have the egg-shaped Weeble doll that stays upright even if pushed. In space exploration, NASA’s Space Camp has these multi-axis trainer that spins an astronaut in different directions. You’re turning and spinning but you don’t fall out. In automobiles, we have seat belts so that in the event of a rollover, you’re buckled in and safe. By looking into distant domains, we get inspiration on the characteristic of preventing tipping over and injury.
