“I want everyone to know that you need to be patient in finding the right man! He definitely exists, and when you find him, never let go.”
— Sonja Jones, Team S
After dating for nearly seven years, Sonja and Scott got engaged last year. They met online via PlentyOfFish, a popular, online-dating service. Sonja was in a divorce counseling class. She was asked to do something she would usually not do. Sonja did something very unlike her—she created a profile on Plenty Of Fish and contacted five men that seemed a good match. Two of the five men responded; one of them was Scott. They have been together ever since.
Stepping Out of Comfort Zone
It took Sonja a few months to try online dating. She decided dating was like sales, which is what she has done for a living. Sonja says, “You just needed to find the right match; so I decided I needed to be open to new opportunities to meet men.” She learned to trust again and embrace a new relationship. Scott motivated her to do that.
Challenges Faced With Online Dating
Sonja found numerous challenges with online dating. She shares, “I met some guys that were a bit scary and off; however, for the most part, most of them seemed nice but not right for me.” It was a lot of work finding the right guy. At one point, Sonja prayed to her late dad to help find her the right man; four days later she met Scott online.
An Amazing Proposal
Scott proposed to Sonja on Dec 25, 2017, and Scott pulled out all the stops to make it a memorable proposal. In Sonja’s words, “He really surprised me! He spray painted the proposal on a big banner and decorated the garage with it. He then created a scavenger hunt with clues and hid them all around the house. Eventually the clues (after eight of them) ended up in the garage. Scott had me close my eyes and turned me around, and he was on one knee proposing with the big banner.” Scott also ensured he got it all on video.
Their three wedding receptions in California, Minnesota and Missouri spanning 15 days was the most memorable time ever for Sonja.
Overcoming Challenges to Grow Relationship
Scott is a very patient man. He waited for Sonja to be able to trust again, and their relationship grew from there. Scott knew it was very important for Sonja to take time to develop deep trust and complete faith in the man she wanted to spend rest of her life with. “I had to drop my walls down to learn to trust again and to embrace a new relationship,” she says. The pair dated seven years, got engaged, and then married in 2017. Sonja says, “We have been together eight years and it has been marvelous.”
