Today I am joined by Ravi Sheth, Chief Scientific Officer at Kingdom Supercultures, a Brooklyn-based foodtech startup who is using microbes like lego building blocks – essentially, using a fermentation method to curate real ingredients right in a lab, without the use of animals, plants or acres of land. They then work with CPG brands, offering the perfect natural microbe combination (superculture) for the brand’s desired products, using their AI technologies, to rapidly produce plant-based alternatives.
Ravi has a deep background in the microbiome and genomics fields. He received a degree in Bioengineering from Rice University, and completed a PhD in Systems Biology as a Hertz and NSF graduate fellow at Columbia University. His thesis work developed new experimental and computational tools to understand gut microbiomes, and was published in first author papers in top journals including Science, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Methods, Nature Microbiology and more.
He also spent time at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation focused on microbiome directed food interventions to address malnutrition, where he discovered his passion for the intersection of the food and microbiome fields. Ravi was also previously cofounder of an edtech startup in college that was acquired by 3D Systems.
