Today I am joined by Dr. Christiaan De Beukelaer is a Senior Lecturer in Culture & Climate at the University of Melbourne. During Michaelmas Term 2023, he is a visiting fellow at Durham University’s Institute of Advanced Study. His book Trade Winds: A Voyage to a Sustainable Future for Shipping blends travel story (by recounting how he got stuck at sea on a cargo ship for five months when the pandemic hit in February 2020), research into the potential of wind propulsion for shipping decarbonisation (the ship he was on is a small wind-propelled cargo ship), and a call to action (as he calls on the shipping industry to consider climate justice and the environmental impacts of shipping beyond carbon dioxide throughout the current energy transition). The book appears on January 31st 2023. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
