Title: What is the potential size of the future?

Abstract: When thinking ahead, we usually only consider a relatively short distance into the future. But just as the past is deep, the future will be deep – unless we go extinct and lose all of it. This talk will sketch some of the reasons we have to think the future could be far richer, happier, more secure and sustainable than normally imagined. This optimism also implies more responsibility for us, living here near the start of history. If we survive and get our act together I believe our future will be grander than anything we can imagine. I also believe we have good reason to think we can do it.
