A Behind the Look at Climate Change with Scott Amyx

This is Scott Amyx with today’s Climate Change Flash Briefing.

I want to take a moment to personally thank you for listening. Climate change isn’t just a trending term; it’s something that affects us all.

On a more personal level, this may come as a surprise to some of you but I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. In a populist world where pundits encourage us to take sides on far ends of the spectrum, I believe a more balanced perspective is needed. And every small detail must to be evaluated independently but also in aggregate because our world is too complex to arbitrarily place a bad or good label on policies.

Research in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and behavioral economics show that people have a number of thinking errors that can cause them to make irrational decisions. We tend to think of ourselves as rational creatures who form opinions on logical facts but in reality, our emotions play a much bigger role in influencing our beliefs than we think. This explains the irrational voter syndrome where voters are moved by emotions and not facts. That irrational decision-making shapes our political process including how we choose to address climate change and our energy policy.

If I have in the smallest way helped you to look at climate change issues in an objective manner, then I’ve done my job. I bring you the facts and you make the final decision. You’re in control.

I want to give you a behind-the-look at what it takes to make these Alexa episodes. The Monday interviews with celebrities, artists, scientists and policymakers often take weeks to record, process and schedule. Equally, Fridays with Scott segment where I drill deeper into the why, what, who, how, when of clean energy also takes hours of preparation, recording, editing and production. Most of these are prepared days if not weeks in advance.

As a trained product manager, I make my decisions based on data. And according to data, the daily 1-2 minute flash briefings have mixed results. And given that my travel schedule makes it very difficult for me to find time on the weekends and evenings, I am deciding to eliminate the daily 1-2 minute daily briefings but retain the Monday interviews and move the Fridays with Scott to Tuesdays. So starting next week, there will be new episodes every Mondays & Tuesdays.
