“Starting Ellebox is my way of fighting for women’s rights. For a century, we have not had a say in the products that go into our bodies. Products for which we deserve transparency and choice.”

– Taran Ghatrora, CEO and Co-Founder, Ellebox

Taran Ghatrora might look like a girl next door but her work makes her special. Starting out with a safe career path as a lawyer, Taran chose to test entrepreneurial waters for something close to her heart—women’s health and empowerment.

With her sister Bunny, Taran co-founded Ellebox, which provides monthly subscription boxes of tampons and organic self-care products. “We provide safe, sustainable period products for women and girls who believe in the power of their choices,” asserts Taran.

Overcoming Initial Adversities

Taran started her career as a lawyer. Her journey to become an entrepreneur took wings when she observed that a subscription box was available in the market for almost everything except for women’s menstrual health.

“When we first started Ellebox, we were uncomfortable telling family members about the products we were selling, and why,” shares Taran. Taran and her sister are of South Asian background where menstruation is still not openly discussed and is a sort of taboo. A recent Bollywood movie, Padman, focused on the taboo topic and brings out the stigma and shame associated with such a natural phenomenon. Naturally, Taran and her sister faced a lot of resistance when they first shared the idea of launching Ellebox.

Promoting Women’s Menstrual Health and Giving Back

Taran is passionate about women’s rights. “Starting this company is my way of fighting for women’s rights. For a century, women and girls have not had a say in the products that go into their bodies. We certainly deserve the transparency and choice regarding menstrual health,” she says.

Her desire to make a difference in women’s lives led Taran to become an entrepreneur. She aims to empower women to live a life of health, dignity, and opportunities by taking care of themselves.

Taran’s firm also contributes its partial profits to Days for Girls, a foundation that educates and provides solutions to young girls for menstrual health. Notably, her team is also running a #PressforProgress campaign to celebrate classic feminist literature.

Dreaming Big and Living It

“Even if only 10 people signed up, we could make a difference in 10 people’s lives. That was enough motivation for us to start and carry on,” says Taran. Within its first year, Ellebox has become a $100,000 venture. This was only possible because of her never-say-die attitude.

“We’re still a baby startup but we have huge dreams, we always did,” says Taran. In spite of facing resistance and leaving a safe career, Taran followed her heart and is contributing to make the world a better place for women. Have you found your passion yet?
